New technology helps DPS catch criminals, Dept says, University of Southern California Daily Trojan Sept 20, 2012
“An increase in technology used by USC’s Dept. of Public Safety has led to more burglars being caught and items recovered from incidents of theft on campus, according to DPS Capt. David Carlisle. . . This marks the first year that university students are being offered free tracking software. Frontdoor Software, which can be downloaded to laptops and lasts for four years, is a product to ward off electronics theft on campus. When a laptop is taken, the owner can report it as stolen, and the security software makes the laptop become vocal, alerting others around it that the device has been stolen and is in the hands of the wrong person. DPS Chief Carey Drayton believes this new software could be an effective product for USC students to use. “A computer that is protected with something is better than a computer protected with nothing,” Drayton said.”"
CSUF giving students free theft recovery software, CSUF Daily Titan August 27, 2012
”A site license of Front Door Software Loss and Recovery, a program that uses Wi-Fi hotspots to track stolen and lost laptops, has been purchased by the IT department and is now available for students to download on the software website. Capt. John Brockie of the CSUF police department is excited to have the new software on campus. “I’m looking forward to getting this and having some success with it,” he said. “I think that it is a neat thing, an added value for the students. . . . As these individuals [thieves] get caught or find that they cannot access student’s electronics, they may give up stealing at CSUF altogether, he said.”"
UCLA offers free laptop theft protection and tracking software. UCLA Daily Bruin January 24, 2012
“Alan Covarrubias frantically looked for his MacBook Pro. . . . Covarrubias is not the first student to have a laptop stolen. In the past year, 160 laptops were reported stolen at UCLA, said UCPD Capt. John Adams. To reduce laptop thefts, UCLA now offers a free laptop protection software to students, faculty and staff. The software, which can be downloaded through frontdoorsoftware.com, comes with a four-year license for multiple computers.”
One Laptop Recovered After Four Computer Burglaries This Weekend. Wesleyan Argus October 2011
“Over the weekend, four students’ laptops were stolen from their rooms in the Foss Hill and Butterfields areas. One of the students alerted Public Safety (PSafe) that he had installed tracking software on his computer and the Middletown Police used the GPS tracker to arrest two juveniles and returned the laptop [with the FrontDoorSoftware program] within a few hours of the burglary.”
The Brown Daily Heard – Campus Crimes Decreased in 2010. Brown Daily Heard, 2010
“On-campus burglaries were down 42 percent last year from the year before, from 67 in 2009 to 39 in 2010, according to the report. Porter attributed this reduction partially to the department’s efforts to make students more aware of the risks involved with leaving laptops unattended and dormitory rooms unlocked. Reminders about laptop thefts and unlocked dorm rooms are regularly included in the department’s campus-wide emails. Increasing participation in the DPS laptop tracking service is another possible factor, Porter said.”
